Who Dat?
So we have a winner. The New Orleans Saints have defeated the Indianapolis Colts to win the Super Bowl and become the NFL Champions. Sweet. I really like Drew Breeze and Reggie Bush – I really don’t like Peyton Manning (but that’s another blog).
A couple of years ago a switch flipped inside of me – I don’t like professional sports anymore. They bore me. I love college football and I love high school football – but I just have little to no interest in MLB, NBA, NFL (I don’t count soccer and hockey as sports). I will still tune in to a PGA event and I have great hope for NASCAR as the new season starts with all of the new rule changes – but baseball, basketball, and football —– I just can’t get fired up anymore. The Braves, Hawks, and Falcons have totally lost me.
I would much rather see some UGA Football, TECH ACC hoops, Gwinnett Braves baseball, or Gainesville Red Elephant football. The Super Bowl just wasn’t all that super to me. I suppose it was a decent game and the team I was pulling for actually won – but I was about as excited about Super Sunday as I was about tuning in to Michael Jackson’s funeral. Ugh.
So this brings me to the point I wanted to make…
Why does the media keep referring to the Saints win as a “resurgence of New Orleans after Katrina…”? How stupid is that? Does someone actually think these players and coaches give a crap about where they play? Do they think these players are devoted to the Big Easy? You gotta be kidding me. If you sit on your ass for 16 games and never touch the ball – you probably make around $800,000 a year as an NFL player. I can promise you that if the right amount of money is waved in front of any athlete today – they are outta there – gone – following the big bucks. And I have to say – I don’t blame them one bit.
The days of a professional sports franchise representing the city they are linked to are over. One of the reasons I and so many other people are fed up with these franchises (besides the boredom) is that you can’t really connect with the team anymore. I realized a couple of years ago – when I couldn’t name but 5 players on the Braves – I’m just not that interested anymore. I can still give you the starting lineup for the 1974 Braves. It stayed the same forever. Ditto for the Falcons and the Hawks.
At least with college and high school I can get a couple of years of the same team / lineups.
So – just to be clear – the New Orleans Saints could be the Oakwood Saints, the Dahlonega Saints, or the New York Saints – doesn’t matter to those guys. They have nothing to do with a “resurgence” in New Orleans. They can however take a little blame for the three people shot to death after the Super Bowl. If they had lost that game those three might be alive today. Yea team.
Moral of the Story: Drew Breeze and Reggie Bush will be playing on the other side of the country as soon as their contracts are up – if not sooner. Don’t get used to these guys if you happen to live down on the Bayou.
Can you say Michael Vick?
