Winter driving – South vs North

Winter DrivingSo I hear we have some nasty weather headed our way this week?

Winter weather means chaos here in the south – schools close, churches close, people lay out of work,  all of the bread and milk will be off the shelves, and of course —————– traffic accidents.  Mostly fender benders that are the result of a slow out of control slide into a parked car.  Nevertheless – it’s a crash and the end result is usually coming out of your pocket in one way or another.

So what about this driving in winter weather?  I keep hearing we can’t do it here in the south.  I keep hearing that those up north really know how to drive in winter weather.

Well – let’s set the record straight…

1) Anyone can drive on snow.  Packed snow is no more difficult to drive on that a good dirt road.  I’ve been in Jackson Hole – I’ve been in Vail – I’ve been in Lake Tahoe —- that stuff is so easy to drive on it doesn’t even warrant discussion.  So – driving in snow isn’t an issue here.

2) We get ice down here.  Even if we get a little snow – it usually turns to ice rather quickly on the roads.  Rarely do we have packed snow on the road.  Let me just say this —————- did you watch CNN or FOX News a couple of weeks ago when they had some ice and snow up north and out west?  Did you see the hundreds…umm…thousands of traffic accidents?  I don’t know how that could have happened – they supposedly know how to drive on ice.

The moral of the story – those up north can’t do it any better than those of us down here.  I know.  I’ve been there.  I’ve seen idiots in Logan, UT, idiots in Chicago, IL, and idiots in Jefferson, GA – doesn’t matter which side of the Mason Dixon line you live on.  I’m really getting tired of hearing this same old cliche’.

If we do get some snow and ice – just be careful out there.  Use your head.  Don’t be that guy or gal that CNN keeps showing over and over – don’t be the moron that the Weather Channel shows after every commercial break.  If you can’t drive – stay home for a day or two.

Now…let me call my insurance company and make sure my policy is in force before the big storm gets here.
