One of my favorite hobbies is politics.  I often compare politics to the business world – sometimes I even learn a thing or two by these observations.  The ultimate sales job is selling yourself to the voter.  I believe there is nothing more difficult on the planet.

I used to think that if I were an informed voter I could make a difference.  If I understood the issues – if I knew the candidates and made an intelligent decision on who to vote for – if I listened to both sides of an issue with an open mind.  I even thought I might run for something one day.

Yea.  Right.

Anyway – what I have decided is that politics continues to have some great entertainment value.  It beats the hell out of “American Idol” or “Dancing with the Stars”.  You have the combination of crazy issues, candidates, elected officials, and the voter.  A recipe for great entertainment – mostly comedy.

Today, I want to focus on the voter.

We have fanatics on both sides – the far left has Michael Moore and Al Sharpton, while the far right has Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity.  There are a a few people that agree with all these people have to say – but most of us fall somewhere in between.  I call these people normal Americans.  They are boring.  They actually think without being told how to think.  I don’t want to write about them.

I want to write about those folks on the fringe.  They make for much better entertainment.  They are not boring like the rest of us.

Let’s take the lefties…the far left of the democratic party.  They totally wig out at the mention of Ronald Reagan or George W Bush.  I mean…TOTALLY wig out.  They loose any sort of composure or sanity when they hear those two names.  If a republican is elected we will no doubt be forced to attend a Southern Baptist church at gunpoint…we will have a war started within a few minutes after the election…they will kill all animals and clear cut every forest in America…the Constitution will be rendered useless…gay people have to go back into the closet…Churches will be the new ACORN…only the poor will pay taxes…

Those on the right have their fears too…the far right of the republican party.  They wig out when they hear the word “Clinton” or “Pelosi”.  If democrats are in charge we are all doomed and going to hell.  We will pull our military out of every spot on Earth…roll out the red carpet to illegal aliens…no more Christmas…interpret the Constitution in whatever manner they like…have gay marriages in every city…and our tax rate will be 95%.

The fact of the matter is – it’s never as bad as you think.  Whatever one side says – believe about half of it – if that.  They are experts at preying on uninformed voters – both sides use the same people and the same companies to incite these fears.

If you sit down and look at the facts…a quite different picture begins to emerge.  But hey…that’s boring…that doesn’t get ratings…advertisers don’t care much for boring.

So the next time you hear “…our healthcare system is being taken over by the government…” or “…they want schoolkids to go without lunches…” – you can remember back on this little blog and just laugh.

Our system of government is almost perfect.  Even with the crooks…even with the liars…even with the media…we have a built-in checks and balance system that overrides all of the silliness and keeps us between the boundaries of the left and right.

Common sense prevails.  We are governed from the center.  We are not governed from the far right – we are not governed from the far left.  We will lean one way or the other, depending on who happens to be in power that day – but that’s about it.

Sorry guys…that’s the way it is.
