A quick look at Northeast Georgia

Northeast GeorgiaIt’s pretty amazing at what we have available to us here in northeast Georgia.  When you think about it we pretty much have everything.  This region seems to do a little better than the rest of the country when it comes to an economic downturn – we’re diversified – we have multiple industries that help keep our cash flowing – we’re not dependent on any one company or industry.  When it comes to housing, even with the current situation our real estate is far more affordable than most parts of the country.  Looking at recreation it’s hard to imagine anywhere with so much to offer.

Lets take a quick tour…

We’ll start in the heart of northeast Georgia – Gainesville.  If you look at Gainesville on a map you will see several routes that take you to different areas of northeast Georgia.

Let’s start with Browns Bridge Road – aka Hwy 369.  This route takes you right over the lake and into GA 400 – you can head south to Atlanta or north towards Dahlonega – and you are virtually right there in the city of Cumming.

The next route we’ll look at is GA 53 – aka Dawsonville Hwy.  This route takes you over the lake and into Dawsonville.  From Dawsonville you can find Amicalola Falls State Park or maybe zip over to Dahlonega on Hwy 9.  We’re gettin’ in the mountains up here.

Now let’s look at Hwy 60 aka Thompson Bridge Road.  This route takes you out of Gainesville, thru the community of Murrayville, and after crossing GA 400, into Dahlonega.  Many people use this route as “the gateway to the mountains” – once you are in Dahlonega you are not all that far from Blairsville, Hiawassee, Suches, Cleveland, or even Helen.  Beautiful drives all around Hwy 60.

Now we’re turning our attention over to Hwy 129 aka Cleveland Hwy.  Hwy 129 is a favorite for motorcycles as this route takes you into Cleveland and then either on up towards Blood Mountain or over into Helen.  This is truly a gateway to the mountains!  We absolutely love this route.

Finally – let’s go up I-985.  985 eventually becomes Hwy 365 and then Hwy 441.  This is the route you take if you are heading up to Highlands, Cherokee, Gatlinburg, or Pigeon Forge.  Leaving Gainesville you go thru Tallulah Falls and up into Clayton – we’re also very close to the Dillard House at this point!  Yum.

Great roadtrips.  Great weekend trips.  Good food along all of these routes.  Maybe we’ll take each route and do a detailed blog soon…in the meantime fill up with some of this cheap gas and hit the road this weekend…there’s lots to do up here in northeast Georgia!
