Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson took the dirt nap.
We all know that, it’s not news anymore. The Memorial Service is over, the circus has calmed down, and now we can look back and reflect about the last few days.
Reflecting about what has transpired over the past few days scares me to death.
There is no argument from me that Michael Jackson was one of the most famous entertainers in the World – arguably THE most famous. I get that. I understand that. I don’t take that from him. I also am aware that he had some fanatic fans out there – hundreds of thousands – again, I understand that.
Here is what I don’t understand…
The news media – across the board – were basically 100% Michael Jackson from June 25 to July 7. That’s just under 300 hours of continuous coverage – all over the place. From FOX News to CNN to MSNBC to CBS to NBC to ABC to ESPN…pretty much every broadcast media on the planet. Ditto for the print media and internet sites. Hell, I’m even writing about it. All of this coverage demands a big, fat —- WHY? Why?
Why?
The only reason I can come up with is that since the media is in the business of making money, and making money means you need big audiences, there must have been tens of millions of people out there who WANTED to see this. I’m not talking about the fanatical MJ fan – I’m talking about Joe Sixpack. Susie Sixpack. Otherwise, those media outlets would have run something else…right?
Does this not scare anyone but me?
These people drive. These people have jobs. These people vote. Is this the makeup of our society now? Have we come down to this? Sure – even I was interested when I heard MJ croaked – it was indeed a major news event, I don’t deny that. I’m pretty sure I had Thriller in my collection – back in the day. But that isn’t the point – this thing has gotten coverage rivaling the death of a President or even the attacks on 911! It’s so bizarre. People crying in the streets…committing suicide…geez
So where does that leave us?
Well – we had enough people interested to take over all of the news cycles for days and days and days – while at the same time we have major foreign policy issues happening, the economy has lost her mind, and the Congress is spending our money like never before. What’s up what that? Where are the priorities?
I don’t blame the media – they are giving us what we want. They are delivering. I’m just wondering when a sound majority of the American public became more interested in a celebrities life rather than their own…and that’s what scares me.
