But I don’t need a website…

Out of BizI make no secret that I help small businesses here in our area develop websites, upgrade websites, create online strategies, and generate new customers with sales training.  Yea, I’m a techie guy but unlike many techies my perspective comes from a sales and business background rather than technical experience.  I see things quite a bit different than many of my competitors.

Having said that I’m really not trying to do too much self-promotion here – I have another agenda – it’s a phenomenon I’ve encountered during the past couple of months while actively looking for new business.  Here it is:

Businesses that don’t have a website or not planning a website —– they are not long for this world.  I think the correct term would be – toast.

I say this not because I’m mad because XYZ Company didn’t want me to do their website.  I say this because of the very scary trend I’m seeing while calling on businesses that don’t already have a website – most of them are not alive anymore!  They may have a fresh ad in a local publication, they may have a fresh Yellow Page ad — but they are out of business.  I know this because obviously I target companies that don’t have a website.  There have been several days where 70% of the businesses I called were “out of business”.

Now what does this mean?  Does it mean that if you don’t have a website you are going out of business?  Of course not.  I think it means that the general mindset / thinking behind the business is backwards rather than forward thinking and many of their other decisions are reflected by the fact that they didn’t spend a few hundred bucks on a website.  They don’t use the social networks.  They don’t have a blog.  On and on and on…

Here’s something interesting…I also target companies that DO have a website…for online advertising.  Guess what?  I’ve yet to call one of these companies and find that they are out of business.  Not one.  Zero.

Maybe all of this is a conincedence?  Maybe it isn’t.  I know this – the numbers are alarming.  It’s to the point now where after I hang up with someone and they are not interested in developing a website or “I don’t need one…” comes out of their mouth, my wife and I start making bets on which month they go out of business.  We’re getting pretty good at it too.

Go ahead…ignore reality.  Forget those stupid social networks.  Who needs a blog?  But remember where you read this…
