Power Grab

ChangeI am by no means an expert when it comes to politics, government, and law – I’m not even close.  I’m more of an innocent bystander that forms opinions based on what I observe and what I read.  I enjoy following politics and I really like spouting off an opinion every now and then – those Iranians are gonna love it once they get to the point where they too can hammer their government as a part of free speech – and they will get there – social networking will overthrow more oppressive governments than military powers have ever thought about defeating…but that’s another story for another day.

My story today is this: Why does the left know how to use power, while the right doesn’t have a clue as to how to use it?  Think about it…forget whether or not you agree or disagree with one side or the other…that isn’t the point here…President Obama is elected along with a slew of democrats around the nation – what do they do?  They IMMEDIATELY begin working on their agenda and they really don’t care what anyone thinks about it.  Flashback to 2000 – President Bush is elected – he enjoys friendly power in the legislative and judicial branches of government also…what do they do?  Nothing.  Zero.  Zip.  Well…they did ram thru a few of the DEMOCRATIC policies like “no child left behind” but other than that they had no agenda, let alone implement an agenda.

Why?

I have a theory.

First off – I believe liberals are thinkers.  Doesn’t make them smart.  Doesn’t make them right.  But they do think.  They ponder on solutions and they come up with an agenda that suits their causes.  They believe that government is more often than not part of the solution.

On the other hand – I believe conservatives are people who enjoy the status quo.  They don’t really ponder much about solutions to problems because they believe that the private sector and individuals are more often than not the answer.  They are also heavily influenced by religion – which by default limits the options / solutions.

So who’s right?  Well – politically it appears the liberals have an edge because they are able to hammer out an agenda and push it forward.  The conservatives are typically the people that are against change and they spend all of their time telling everyone why it won’t work and why we don’t need to grow government.  That doesn’t work well in campaigns.

I say we need a little of both.  We need the left to push for progressive change in certain areas – we need the right to hold them in check.  In the end we govern and operate from the center.
