Is it the economy?

Business DownturnMost people I know are complaining that business is down.  I don’t think anyone could argue that in most cases business is indeed down – across pretty much all industries.  However, there are those companies out there – across all industries – that are expanding, doing very well, and ignoring the economic downturn.

How is that?

Well, I had to take a good look at our own businesses — this is what I have come up with — and it’s not all that brilliant:  Those who have a strategy and a plan – and – they implement that strategy and plan – are doing ok.  Those that are working harder and smarter – are doing ok.  Those that are stuck with the status quo are either not doing ok or soon to not be doing ok.

Maybe it’s not so much “the economy” as it is “the owner”.

I notice in my business – on the days that I actually focus on our gameplan, work hard on business development, make those phone calls, send those emails — do all the things that are time-consuming and difficult — we do quite well.  On the days that I loose focus and start wandering around doing irrelevant things (staying busy) — we don’t do so well.

Tough economic conditions weed out the companies that lack focus.  Tough economic conditions cause us lazy folks to get with the program and find that focus – put together a plan – and do it.  Tough economic conditions cause us to attack problems rather than run from them.  Tough economic conditions are like a slap in the face – a dose of reality.

When we finally turn the corner and things start to look a little better there gonna be thousands of businesses out there that are being run much better, much more effective, and operating with a strategy and gameplan.  This can only be good when we look down the road from a long-term perspective.

Over and out.

  1. OK. I’ve had 24 hours to cool off my rage. Unfortunately, it’s not cooled off as it was reignited this morning while watching Fox News. Mr. Obama has finally shown me his value system and what he views as important. Last week Mr. Obama met with leaders of various veterans groups supposedly to get their view / input / reaction to his latest “idea”. What Mr. Obama wants to do is force those members of our military who are wounded in action to use their private insurance to pay for their treatment and rehabilitation. As a veteran who knows a few names on “The Wall” and has a few friends who wear Purple Hearts, my outrage at this stupid, unconscionable, cold, heartless, self-serving, betrayal of a trust of the highest order, God, I can’t think of all the appropriate words that describe this type of cold, heartless thinking. Oh, and by the way – those of you who have employer provided medical insurance? Get ready for Mr. Obama to tax that benefit as income. How do you like the double whammy he gives our wounded veterans? What is this person thinking? He can give Billions to democrat faithful but to save $500 million he’s going to stick it to our military? Every time I think of this whole issue my rage boils up. What were we, the American people thinking when we voted him in office? Is this the “hope and change” we were led to believe was going to come along? I’m going to stop now before I get really mad and begin offending people.

  2. So you think our priorities might be out of line here? Let’s toss a few billion dollars to banks all across the planet, throw several hundred million at CEO’s and Executives who couldn’t run a convenience store, and while we’re at it – let’s have our veterans use their private insurance – we can’t afford THAT.

Well – at least you can watch your President on the Tonight Show tomorrow night. Isn’t that comforting.

  3. I, too, am outraged at our “illustrious” chosen one aka The President. Our veterans have served our country and deserve our respect and now they are going to see what they have earned taken away from them. Our current military personnel and veterans were promised certain things and our government should keep that promise. Instead, Big O and his cronies want to take from them and give to others. This is certainly change – all of you Obamaniacs take heed – he promised us change but no one asked what CHANGE meant!

His solution to our economic crisis is to tax and double tax anything he can while propping up companies that were not run well, giving billions to foreign banks and other sleazy behind the scenes money giving acts that would cause most Americans to gag if they knew about it – which they would if they bothered to learn something instead of watching As The World Turns. But, can’t blame it all on Big O. The Carter, Clinton and Bush administrations have all had a hand in causing this situation. But that is for another rant/blog post. Get with it Mr. Obama – please don’t hurt our veterans by taking away what they have earned our taxing them to death. They deserve more, not less. Let’s show our military people that we cherish their service and sacrifice.

  4. Well, I had a discussion about this topic over lunch with some people who are a whole lot smarter than I am (no, Dennis, I wasn’t at a kindergarden class) and we all agreed that this whole issue with wounded military personnel will never fly. We, the American public, will never allow it. But I keep coming back to the idea of what value system is in place with this guy to even have the thought, much less meetings with veterans groups leaders? He just doesn’t get it. He has no concept of who he should be grateful to for all the things he has in his life and all the experiences he’s had. I have a favorite t shirt I wear, especially when playing tennis in the summer. On the front of it, in large black block letters it says GOT PEACE? with a very nice peace sign below it. On the back, just over the shoulder blades, again in big black block letters it says THANK A VET. Maybe we all need to wear one of these T shirts with a tea bag pinned dto it.
