Professional Sports Bore Me
Professional sports bore me.
I don’t know what happened. Maybe it’s just that I’m getting older? I dunno.
I used to be able to name the starting lineup of just about every baseball team in the National League – now I don’t even know which teams are in the NL. I used to be counting down the hours until the Daytona 500 – now I catch a lap or two here and there while doing something else. I used to be drooling for my ATT Classic tickets every year – now we don’t even have that tournament here anymore. I can say that I’ve always hated hockey and soccer so there is no loss there.
Let’s start with baseball. I think the problem started when free agency came about. I don’t know from one year to the next who is playing for who. I mean – c’mon – Hank Aaron was a BRAVE. Johnny Bench was with the Reds. I couldn’t name 3 players for the Braves right now without hunting them on a website or looking at the sports section of the paper. I tried to watch a couple of games last year – has baseball always been this boring or has it changed?
NASCAR. My wife and I went to Bristol a couple of years ago. Walking 20 miles with 250,000 people and paying mega-bucks for everything you see and do isn’t my idea of fun anymore. I remember driving up to Bristol to watch a race when there might be 40,000 people in the stands – and the racing was GOOD! Now we get to watch these massive-boring races on all of these 1.5 mile tracks that bore me to death. I’m not sure I watched an entire race last year.
Golf. Tiger is the only reason to watch – and he’s done.
I did leave out the Falcons. I got interested again after we tossed Mr Vick in jail. In general thought I could care less about the NFL – but I do enjoy watching the Falcons. But here’s what’s missing: I really don’t care whether they win or loose. I used to go nuts. I used to be mad for days. I don’t even remember the score five minutes after the game now.
Give me a good high school football game on Friday night. I’ll take that anyday.

Well, here’s one I definitely agree with you about. Pro sports is so packaged, marketed, “spun” that it’s not sports any more, it’s all about image. Give me a few minutes and I’ll probably be able to give you t he starting line up for both the Milwaukee Braves and Chicago Cubs from 1956, but neither one had a steady line up you could get excited about last year. Try this one for size – This year the Braves ought to do whatever they can in April and May to make young Mr. Franceour look really good, then trade him for an outfielder and pitcher. This is the mistake the Braves made two years ago with Andruw Jones. You could see them declining with increasing ego. Get rid of them and get something worthwhile for them. The Braves also reinforced the reason why young players shouldn’t “give 110%” when they let $3mm send John Smoltz, the face of the Braves, to Boston. Plus, now Andruw Jones wants back in comfort zone of Atlanta. Good Grief!! Declare 2009 and 2010 development years, bring up the minor league guys who are a year or so away, let them develop and get back in the hunt in 2010 and 2011. Let Bobby Cox retire, bring in someone who will establish some discipline and keep the egos in check and make the game fun for the fans and the players. And that’s MY rant!!
ps: NASCAR has turned into a 200mph parade, golf and tennis are fashion shows, hockey and soccer have a niche following that won’t grow beyond what it now is and if we don’t keep an eye on it, college and high school sports will boost athlete’s egos and pampering to the point of pro athletes. And that’s wrong.
Forget about the ATLANTA Braves…we have the GWINNETT Braves to pull for this year…
