Snow!

Highlands - SnowIt’s getting that time of year again.  We chase snow.  We are constantly checking out the weather websites and weather channel to find out where it might be snowing nearby on any given weekend – from now until April.  Since we don’t get it down here in Oakwood very often my wife and I have decided to chase it.  Here are some of our favorite spots – nearby – that might have some of the white stuff:

Asheville NC – Beautiful city.  Beautiful drive.  Here is a Google Map if you might be interested in taking this little drive – just under 3 hours.

Boone NC – Now we’re up to a 4-5 hour drive – almost too far to just go up and spend a Saturday night, but if you can do two nights it’s well worth the effort.  Click here for a Google Map.

Brevard NC – Cool little town at the base of the Blue Ridge Parkway.  Easy to get to – a great stop anytime of the year.  Click here for a Google Map.

Maggie Valley NC – We got snowed in here last year in April – about six inches!  Only about 2.5 hours and just around the corner from Cherokee.

Gatlinburg TN – Without a doubt this is our favorite winter weekend retreat.  It’s close enough for a one-nighter and you are almost guaranteed some of the white stuff on the Smokey Mountains between Cherokee and Gatlinburg.  Also – great food and lots of hotels.  Google Map – click here.

Highlands NC – Another of our favorite spots.  Highest town on the eastern seaboard – I just got an email and they are getting snow right now – Oct 28!  Beautiful drive and close.  This place ranks a very close second to Gatlinburg and is the perfect one-nighter from Atlanta.  Google Map – Click here.

There are also some areas of Georgia that get more snow that the rest of us – Blairsville, Blood Mountain, Hiawassee, Helen, Dillard, Suches, Blue Ridge — all at a little higher elevations and a quick drive from anywhere in the Atlanta metro area.  We’ll discuss these places in more detail in another post.

Happy snow hunting.
