Which economy is hurting?

Personal EconomyWe have several economies out there that we can spend time worrying about, but I would suggest that spending time being concerned with the right economy will pay big dividends.

Here’s what I mean:

1) We have a NATIONAL economy - the numbers are out there for everyone to see. This is what the media focuses on and this is the easiest set of numbers to spin — either from the left or the right viewpoints. Personally, I pay this little attention - I have virtually no influence on what happens here.

2) We also have a STATE economy - very similar to the national economy. The numbers can be sliced and diced by both parties; a fun game for all. Again - I pay little attention.

3) We have a LOCAL economy. Whether you live in Gainesville, Blairsville, Hartwell, or wherever - there are economic conditions that apply to your local area - generally focused around one or two prominent industries or companies. These numbers can indeed have an impact on your personal situation - but only a limited impact.

4) Finally we have a PERSONAL economy. This is the baby that counts. If the national unemployment rate is 10% but you have the best job you have ever had, making more money than ever before - so what? If homes are being foreclosed on but you have your situation taken care of - so what? If a couple of Fortune 500 Companies start laying off - but your small business is hiring - so what?

Sure - this seems rather selfish on the surface - but if we all just took care of our own little situation - if we all worried more about how to generate additional income and increase our personal net worth - wouldn’t we be helping the local, state, and national economies?

I say let the media complain and moan. Whether or not my financial situation is good or bad has little to do with who is sitting in the Oval Office or who occupies those 535 seats in Congress - it has far more to do with what I’m doing or what I’m not doing…on a personal level.

“the economy” is just a set of numbers and circumstances that allow some of us to have excuses - a way to justify our current situation. Don’t fall for it.
