This is 2008
So we decide to take a little roadtrip Friday. We scoot up to Blairsville, over to Hiawassee, stop by Brasstown Bald, back down to Cleveland, and home to Oakwood. Great trip. We had a blast.
Let me preface this by saying I’m not a big drinker. My wife is not a big drinker. But we do like wine every now and then.
I walk into a grocery story in Blairsville - I can’t find the wine. I politely ask a gal working at the cash register “where is your wine?” She gives me this weird look and says “we’re a dry county”. I almost laughed. I thought she was joking - maybe even flirting with me. Not so. It’s true. Union County is dry. I know. I know. This is 2008 for most of us but apparently some folks have not been notified. This is right on par with Alabama.
Fast forward about an hour later and I’m walking in a grocery store in Cleveland. Same question. Same weird look. Same answer. “we’re a dry county”. Now I’m getting concerned. This is weird. I’ve had drinks in Helen (White County - same as Cleveland) and it was legal. I’ve been in wineries in Union County (Blairsville) - they sold booze.
I wonder how many elected officials have a financial interest in any of those places that can sell booze in the dry counties? Surely not.
Anyway - I just found this to be surreal. Crazy. Nuts. Prohibition didn’t work in the 20’s…and it doesn’t work now. I’m just shaking my head…
I might do a little research and see how many dry counties we do have - and how that relates to a windfall for elected officials. There is no logic. There is no reason. The only possible motive for something like this makes me seem very cynical…
Crap.
