Hard to talk the economy down…
Oh they are mad. Furious. Beside themselves.
First…we get the data that our GDP grew 6/10 of a percent during the first quarter. Notice I said GREW. Now…we’re not setting any records with that but at least we’re growing our GDP. Far from a recession. All that talk - I suppose that can wait for now. That just makes the mainstream media furious.
If that wasn’t enough…we’re now getting data saying that unemployment WENT DOWN in April. Yep. DOWN. Shocker. Anyone in Hall County and most parts of northeast Georgia that owns a business can sympathize with that one.
Fewer IED’s in Iraq…unemployment down…economy growing…budget deficit shrinking…this is a little unsettling during an election year! I love it.

I drove past the Mall of Georgia Sunday afternoon on my way to CostCo. (by the way, consistently $.06 a gallon cheaper there) Just look at the parking lot for the mall. Just look at the people walking to their cars. Admittedly anecdotal, but if that’s a bad economy, Winder better start building parking lots for the mall. There is opportunity out there for those who pay attention and look around.
I’m off tonight to give a speech to a group of about 50 men and women who are on the job market - looking for a new job. The associate of a friend invited me to speak. With a long background in Human Resources he probably figured I know a few secrets. I do. These folks with hear a few of them. They won’t like them. That’s because when you’re unemployed and the price of two essential products is on the rise (that would be gasoline and food), all you want to know is “what’s the secret?” The basic secret is - - it’s going to take about 1 month (maybe a day or two longer) for each $10,000 in salary you’re looking for from the new job. That’s why so many people think hard about starting a business. You can get it going faster, or at least you think you can. Sorry, finding a job or starting a business is just damn hard work that takes a lot of time. You’re just trying to decide if you want to work for a fool or an idiot. By the way - I chose idiot.
Amen brother.
There are really no “secrets” to finding a job or starting a business - there are better ways to do things than others - but no secrets.
It takes hard work, sacrifice, and persistence. These people who believe they can read a book or check out a website have a rude awakening coming.
I also chose idiot.
