Roadtrip Idea…Blairsville to Clayton
We’re big on weekend roadtrips – lots of things to do here in northeast Georgia – lots of great food to sample – and you can do it all easily on a Saturday. One of our favorite trips is the drive from Blairsville over to Clayton. The trip is about 45 miles and takes around an hour – however – you’ll be stopping along the way. You will be traveling US 76 East.
Your first place of interest will be the quaint town of Young Harris – you’ll pass by Young Harris College (Zell Miller teaches here). I remember taking this drive on a January afternoon a couple of years ago – Young Harris was covered in snow and the place was beautiful.
Our next area of interest will be Chatuge Lake – the Georgia / North Carolina state line divides the lake just a few miles to our north…crossing the bridge over the lake we head into the town of Hiawassee.
Hiawassee is located in Towns County and is the home of the Georgia Mountain Fair. As you leave Hiawassee continue on Hwy 76 East towards Tate City. When you get to the intersection of Hwy 197 (One of the best drives in Georgia) you can take a quick detour south on 197 and visit Moccasin Creek State Park.
Back up to Hwy 76 we continue east and skirt the northern shores of beautiful Lake Burton. It’s about 10 miles or so into the city of Clayton – our final destination.
This little trip is a fantastic roadtrip – not to mention whatever you have to do in order to get up to Blairsville. We live down in the Oakwood area so our trip up to Blairsville is a roadtrip in itself.
Have fun…spend money in northeast Georgia!
