Recession?

I keep hearing the word “recession” tossed around everytime I turn on the TV. Why? A recession is defined as two consecutive quarters (six months) of negative GDP growth. We’ve not seen even one day of negative GDP growth. I suppose the fact that this is an election year and the news media generally favors one particular political party - I guess that explains it…
